Blades of Glory - Friday, August 31, 2007

Was this awesome? No....Yeah! Oh my goodness how could you not love this movie? It has Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Pam from The Office, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler and even Nick Swardson - the guy from Grandma's Boy and the best episodes of Reno 911, among others. And they are all wearing tights!

This movie is everything you expect. If you don't like Will Ferrell's brand of humor, skip it. If you know you love him (like me) you will like this movie. I can't say much else. Don't want to give away the plot or lack of one. There's a lot of laughs in this package!

After watching I had to put in Night at the Roxbury for old times sake. I love stupid humor!

Dead Easy - Thursday, August 30, 2007

This is a major B movie. However, I love Richard Grieco & the only way to get my fix seems to be with B movies. And 21 Jump Street episodes, but that's a different story.

This movie has about 3 different movies within it. You just never know when it will end. And oh, the ending. I know they want you to be blown away in the final few minutes - but please, sooooo lame. Stop with the generic twists already.

So, first we meet most of the characters. They are all ugly people doing ugly things to each other. Richard is a married man having an affair, promising the mistress that he will leave his wife. The wife, we find out is also sleeping around. The detective that bears this news is just way too into it. Richard confronts the wife with photos of her affair & demands a divorce. She refuses. He and the girlfriend talk about how to get the wife out of their lives. Of course, killing her appears as an option.

Now this part is very amusing. They show both Richard (Simon Storm - ha, ha, what a name) and the girlfriend, separately, talking about having the wife killed. To two separate would be assassins. Ha, ha, ha. If only the movie would have followed this line of farce - it could have become a comedy where shenanigans ensue and everyone laughs off the zaniness.

Oh well, it seems Richard wins the race & makes a deal with the detective that originally photosgraphed the wife with her lover. Here's where the movie goes bad. No, not bad - even worse.

The detective abducts the wife, Richard reports it to the police, so now they are on the job. Now we meet the inspector. He's the only character that was likable, other than Richard's abs. He is getting to the bottom of it, following Richard, being very nosy. Very astute.

So, the abductor meanwhile is holding the wife, alive. And doing a very bad impression of Buffalo Bill, might I add. He loves his lipstick and unwilling women.

Too sum up the rest, the wife is saved by the detective and goes back home. To the husband. The girlfriend, who can't get him to call her back, goes back to her assassin & makes a deal with him to kill the wife. These people are brilliant. The assassin sleeps with the wife & they make a deal. It all culminates when Richard returns home from a business trip. Two people are shot, two people survive.

I guess you will just have to watch to see who was in league with whom. As if you or anyone else could even care. I really didn't at the end of it all.

And, is it just me, or is Richard Grieco getting kind of a Bruce Willis look going on? I'm not sure what it is - the bigger forhead, maybe too much botox or some extra weight? I don't know, but I still think he's yummy. Now, if I can just find the old episodes of Booker to review...

Dead Birds - Wednesday, August 29, 2007

OK, I have no idea why this was called Dead Birds. Maybe I will look into that. There was one dead bird in the whole movie.

I don't know why, but I am addicted to these B horror movies. This one is a cross between 2 of my favorite genres - the B horror movie and the western. OK, it's not a real western since it is set during the civil war, but there is a bank robbery, horses, gun slinging, etc.... so it counts.

I probably found this because it stars Patrick Fugit, a favorite of mine. It also stars an unrecognizable Isaiah Washington and Mark Boone Junior, who played a dirty cop in Batman Begins as well as 2 other movies. I really like him for some reason.

Well, the plot goes like this: A group pulls off a bank robbery & seeks shelter in a deserted house. Creepy, supernatural things occur. People dissappear & become unhinged. All mistrust each other.

I really liked the feel and style of this one. Although, many of these B horror movie have the same look. It's that retro grunge old-timey look, where everything is in sepia tones. I rather like it but am worried it is becoming tired.

The, erm, scary parts were good but I'm afraid they overused the morphing from creepy kid/person face to blood-curdling demon face. This is another cool effect that I've been seeing a lot of. It's quick but packs a punch. I think it might be included in the software bundle for editting B movies, though. It seems like everyone uses it.

The plot was OK, but when are they going to come up with something better than the ole spirits want the people to solve their murders plot? This isn't exactly that but close enough.

Oh, and I absolutely love how they shot the hairless beast in the beginning & hardly looked at it before continuing on to the house. Um, hello? Shouldn't somebody be worried when we see a vicious animal we never have before? Anyone?

Orlando: A Biography - Monday, August 27, 2007

Orlando: The Movie. I reviewed the book on MissAmyReads earlier today and could not wait to see the movie. So, since I have big important connections at Netflix, I am now watching it.

To recap, the novel is about a person who lives over 400 years, first as a man and then as a woman. Very daring work by Virginia Woolf, very off-beat & different than anything I have ever read.

The movie is obviously much shorter, and truly is less colorful. I felt like I could see & taste the colors in the painting while I was reading. The movie is not as much a dream, more like a period piece, really.

I was truly disappointed that the opening scene was not true to the book. What could be more memorable than a boy playing with a sword and chopping at his fathers collection of trophy heads which are strung up in the attic that runs the length of the house? Hmmmm? That's right, not much.

Death, Love, Poetry, Politics, Society, etc... perfectly explains what part of life Orlando is experiencing in that section of the story, the theme of each short, if you will.

I adore Tilda Swinton. She is amazingly androgynous any time I have seen her. So, so unique. That pale alabaster skin that glows like marble. I don't know that she pulled off Orlando as man though. He was exceedingly girly.

They also skipped a lot of the portions of the book. This is always to be expected in the film version, but I'm noticing it more than others since I only just finished the book.

In the book, right after she becomes a woman, she takes off to roam with the gypsies. The movie left that out. In the movie she heads straight home. While with the gypsies she gets a hankering for home & tries to explain to them why but they don't understand. I love how the following quote expresses Orlando's frustration with trying to make them see:

"No passion is stronger in the breast of man than the desire to make others believe as he believes. Nothing so cuts at the root of his happiness and fills him with rage as the sense that another rates low what he prizes high."

"Indeed such differences of opinion are enough to cause bloodshed and revolution."

Besides her time with the gypsies, they left out a lot of the inner workings and things that went on within Orlando. Oh, and that ending was completely different, but still good.

For Hire - Sunday, August 26, 2007

I actually couldn't even find it on Amazon, so you can check it out at Netflix.

This is a B-movie from 1997. It stars Rob Lowe & Joe Mantegna.

Very, very odd movie. A lot of the dialogue is cliched and lame, but the plot is interesting. Oh, and Rob Lowe doesn't look very much like himself. I don't know if he's heavier than normal or if it's the obviously fake bleach blond hair he is sporting or what, but man does he look different.

**Spoiler alert**

From pretty much the beginning, I could tell they were messing with him, but I couldn't figure out why. Once you find out why, you kind of think it would end fairly quickly, but then there's a whole other part of the movie where they get justice.

**Spoiler ended**

It was the kind of movie you sit in bed watching when you can't really sleep. I would never have taken the time during the day to watch this one. Just don't tell my mother-in-law that, she's the one who recommended it.

The Number 23 -

Shouldn't they be freaked out by the number 5 then?

The movie was pretty good, but I will admit to reading magazines during so I wasn't truly paying attention to this one.

One thing that stood out for me was that the fantasy sequences were so well-filmed. It was like a comic book come to life. A very colorful and dark comic book. They were my favorite parts and I would love to see an entire movie filmed like this.

I also thought Jim Carrey's performance was impressive. Not once did I think of Ace Ventura or any of his other goofy roles.

The rest was pretty discombobulating, but like I said, I wasn't really paying attention. So, I can't say too much.

Project Runway - Season 1, First 4 Episodes - Saturday, August 25, 2007

I almost sent this back since at first it wouldn't play in my DVD player at first. I am so glad I didn't. I do not have cable since 1. I am too cheap and 2. I shun TV and 3. I despise watching the same thing at the same time as everyone else. So, I wait till I decide I actually want to see a TV show and the I order it from Netflix and watch a disc at a time.

I'm pretty sure I know who won and who was in the top 3 from reading it in the gossip rags when the show was originally on, but I still find myself very interested in the cast/competitors. The show is so interesting in fact, that I wish I could have been there when they were creating their works, so I could take in all the details. Sometimes it's hard to keep the designers and their works straight, but it's worth it to try. The challenges I have seen so far include the Innovation challenge (where they used supermarket items), the Envy challenge (make a dress out of white cotton jersey using the theme of envy), the Banana Republic challenge (make a dress for the BR store) and the Rock Star challenge (where they outfitted a rising star).

I have my favorites and I definitely have opinions on my non-favorites. And I definitely like that this reality show is more focused on the competition than the drama. Even though there is enought of that to be entertaining.

Dead End - Friday, August 24, 2007

Huh. You know, I was alternately amused and annoyed by the family at first. They clearly all hated each other and continually insulted each other non-stop. They were just downright mean.
The father takes a back way to Grandma's house Christmas Eve and things start to get weird. He sees a woman in white in the woods with a baby. What does he do? He stops to help her. She doesn't speak & seems in shock so they decide that they will turn the car around & head back to the "cabin" they saw a little ways back. There are five people already in the SUV. Instead of squishing in the family decide that one of them must walk the distance back to the cabin. Did I mention it is dark? And this is the back way? There are no streetights! Um, hullo? Family? Are you the stupidest bunch of human beings ever? Clearly they are. The daughter volunteers and they allow this! She gets out, in her dress & heels, and starts to walk back, in the dark. From there it just gets stranger as various characters are bumped off.
Despite all my cynicism, I have to admit that two scenes were decidedly creepy. Last night while I was watching this in the dark after kind of a long night out, the first one seemed to possibly be one of THE creepiest moments. It gave me a zing, shiver, what-have-you.
As the girl is walking back to the cabin (really more of a lean-to shack), we view the family already there. The son sneaks of to - of all things - masturbate. WTF? He even sticks some porn up to the tree with his gum! Anyway, they realize the daughter's boyfriend is missing. Hmmmmm. Then, cut to the girl walking. She sees running lights, a black retro car passes her. That for some reason got me. Then as it passes and you see the boyfriend is in the back of the car. It sounds cheesy, but I think it was well-done, filming-wise.
The other scene is where they are driving, the father slams on his breaks (one of many times), they see an old-fashioned pram in the road. Ugh, it is sooooo creepy. I can't even explain it. It was just other worldly. Of course, they get out of the car (again) and examine it, push it out of the way, etc... - all the typical stuff.
Of course once the bloodfest is over, we find out what was really happening & I was kind of relieved that it was a fairly typical ending. All in all, I think the filming itself was very interesting. I thought the acting was pretty good and freaked me out - especially the mom losing it after the son dies. Oh, another thing - they kept loading up the dead bodies in the back. Gggggheeee. Yech! I mean, I guess you don't want to leave your family as road kill, but still... Hopefully I will never be in that situation & have to make that call. Ger.

Perfect Stranger - Wednesday, August 22, 2007

OK, I don't know how Berry, Willis and Ribisi ALL woke up in this B-movie, but they all rise to the challenge and ham it up with the best of the worst.

Halle swings from highly emotional female to no-nonsense woman to crazy cold bitch in this one. You never know who she'll be next.

Bruce is the iconic, sexy, paranoid boss of the big ad firm. But why is he so paranoid?

Giovanni is the gorpy yet creepy Ducky Dale character to Halle's Pretty in Crazy.

There are many twists. The first biggy has nothing to do with the ending, so don't be fooled. Who's good, who's bad? Um, spoiler alert: No one is good!

The real end of the movie reeks of B movie so badly that I expected to see Richard Greico show up and kidnap somebody, anybody. Well, I was hoping, I do so lurv him.

All in all, not worth my time, but there were some beautiful graphics that played over the credits. Are they really the inside of eyes? You decide.

Fracture - Monday, August 20, 2007

I just watched this very engrossing film. I love (!) Anthony Hopkins and rather like Ryan Gosling. And the movie itself was good too. I definitely saw shades of Hannibel as well as Titus in this one. Anthony plays a highly intelligent older man whom we witness attempting to murder his wife. He is ruthless at times, then almost curious and vulnerable at others. I have to admit I did end up rooting for him and felt rather bad for the lawyer played by Ryan.

It is also one of the few films lately that held my interest. I could not do anything else while watching this one. Just before this one I watched Vacancy & actually read magazines through most of it. It was also pretty good, within it's own genre. It just seemed a lot like a typical horror movie and I was kind of confused why there were two rather big-name stars in it. I do like both of them, though, so it was easy on the eyes, at any rate.
