The 5 Minute Face
- 8/31/2008
This is a great book for anyone who is A. clueless about applying makeup or B. wants to simplify & streamline their routine. The main looks is great to pull you together for most days & there are a few ones that go beyond that for special occasions. It was a quick read with nice full color photos. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't too wordy while still gettig its point across. And, I can't wait to try out her highlighter tip! I can't wait to highlight my eyes in such a subtle way. Favorite Quotes from Only Forward
- 8/23/2008
I recently finished this paperback. I loved it & couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I have several favorite quotes that I would like to share: "I was not going to sleep tonight. Someone had to watch over Alkland, and wake him from such dreams as might come. Someone had to play the hero, had to know that little bit more, had to be that tiny step ahead that keeps the story moving. And always, in my life, that someone is me. I'd like to sleep sometimes, watched over. I'd like to feel taht someone guards my dreams and is there ready to touch my hand and help me. I'd like to be the one who reaches out to be comforted, to be loved, the child stretching for the embrace of a sun it knows will be forever warm. But it can't be like that. Why? You'll see perhaps. If it's relevant." "The more you get to know someone, the more there is to dislike. If you get to know them well enough, you hate them." "When you're a child, the world forbears you, allows you your flights of imagination, your feelings of specialness. But sooner or later the privileges are withdrawn, and all you're left with is a stunned bitterness at the realization that you're just the same as everybody else." Yes, I tend to be a cynic. It's true. Labels: Books

Book Theme - Dogs
- 7/24/2008
This last library visit I just happened to end up with three fiction books that relate to dogs. I did just get my first dog ever so maybe my subconscious was at work. Hmmmm...
Anyway, I was simultaneously reading all three until I finished one of them:
This one is a story written from the perspective of a 15 year old boy with autism. It was very enlightening to look out from his eyes. The person who wrote it works closely with autistic children so I feel it was probably a fair estimation of the thought processes of children with autism.
I also ended up with this one: This is a book about werewolves. Written in verse. Erm... At first the style threw me but as I am reading it I forget to notice the verse and feel like I'm reading regular prose. I am going to attribute this to a talented & skilled author. It's a pretty interesting story too, besides the poetry.
Last of all, I picked up this little gem to finish: I started this one a while back. (I absolutely LOVED Moers' The 13 1/2 Lives of Captain Bluebear!) so I got it so I can finally finish it. It's about a fantastical place called Zamonia & you never know what kind of creature you will meet next. Rumo is a Wolperting - kind of a dog, with little horns, who loves to fight & is following his silver thread. I like to think of it as a bedtime story for adults. However, I don't see any reason why you couldn't share it with your children as they could really get into such an imaginative read.
So that's the sum-up of my dog books. It was kind of an odd coincidence when I realized I had three about dogs (or dog-type creatures, who's counting?). Labels: Books

Fashion Books - Style 101
- 6/03/2008
If you read In Style, you've already gotten most, if not all, of this information. As an unfaithful reader, I've missed a lot but still recognized much of the content here. I have to admit that I am quite taken with the way they put it all together & quite like this as a kind of quick reference guide to style. It's very sharply done. Thumbs up from me! Eye Candy by Linda Mason
- 4/20/2008

I just got this little gem & I absolutely love it. It is by Linda Mason, one of my favorite makeup artists - remember Sun Sign Makeovers? That book brought fantasy to makeup. I didn't subscribe to the sun sign idea but I loved how fun the "looks" were. Now comes this new one from Linda who is known for her "creative, freestyle makeup". And it reminded my of another of my favorite places to look for inspiration - Miss K's blog over at Aromaleigh! If you haven't visited I highly recommend it. The colors, the creativity - it's a makeup/makeover fan's dream. The latest post is an excellent example of the photos readers send in of their own looks. Check it out! Labels: Books

Queen of Babble
- 3/28/2008

I was drawn into this book especially due to the main character's interest in vintage fashion, as well as the fact that she is a truly stylish girl from my home state of Michigan. Odd, for a heroine, I think. Oh, and that it takes place in France - oh bliss!
She also shares a possibly useful tip - the character claims that soaking a rust stain in a water/cream of tartar mixture removes the stain. I will be trying that out as soon as I find some rust stains! Do try this at home & tell me the results! Oh, and while searching Amazon for my link I see there is a whole series of these. Will I be reading more? Oui, oui! P.S. I adore the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella! Are any of you fellow fans disappointed by the early photos of Isla Fischer in character?
