Review of Revlon ColorStay Brow Enhancer
- 2/02/2009
So, continuing with my obsession with my invisible eyebrows... I nabbed this as soon as I saw it. It's a tinted wax on one end & a highlighter on the other. For some dumb reason I bought the light brown. I tried it & as I pretty much suspected, it worked but was too light.
I went back & picked up the medium brown & it pretty cool. For some reason though, I am still preferring my classic powder. I guess I'm finding that all other applications tend to look less "done" and most take just as long as my powder. So, why not just look "done" like I prefer? Also, this one seems to wear off sooner than anything else I've tried.
This would be best I think for someone whose eyebrows are pretty much a good color but are maybe a bit unruly. The wax will smooth & hold them in place. Plus, the highlighters I've seen being included in most brow products are just so exciting! Of course we need light & shimmer there. Duh!Labels: Beauty and Makeup, Reviews

Quickie Product Reviews

Wet n Wild Ultimate Brow
I found these by spotting the "Last Chance" tag underneath their cubby. I had no idea Wet n Wild made such a product. There is a pencil on one end and a mascara-like substance on the other end. I've asked at Walgreens before if they sold anything like a mascara but for eyebrows and the answer was always 'no'. Well, temporarily they do, until they dissappear. Which they have because I bought them all out - of that store anyway. They also have a darker brown, which I bought one of to try. It works on me but not as well as the lighter so there is a lone dark brown left at the Walgreens on Pine Ridge Road.
I thought I would be driving all over trying to get the rest in my color. They work really well & give me a more casual, not as 'done' look. But the truth is that it takes just as long to apply as my powder. I always thought it would be like, slick and it's on. But it still takes a steady hand because it is easy to make a mess with.
Overall rating - 4/5. I do wish it were quicker/easier to apply since I thought it would be a real time save. However, I think it gives me a less 'done' look & I don't want to look like I tried too hard EVERY day.

Cover Girl Smoothers - IlluminatorNice but not quite what I was hoping. However, anything that is supposed to cover my undereye circles is never quite what I was hoping. It covers a little, does that illuminator thing do distract (I guess) from the purple undereye issue. It is rather thin & light colored though - even for me who is a step darker than an albino. So it kind of gives me raccoon eyes for a bit in the morning and then disappears when I touch it.
Overall - 3/5, just because I like that it goes on quickly. I don't have to smudge it much, just tap with my finger to blend a tiny bit.
Revlon ColorStay Mineral Eye Shadow
Nice & stays on for a long time. Very sparkly, good colors for us pale girls.
4/5 but not because it's mineral - I don't even notice that. I like the color palette a lot & that it stays on well.

New 'Do
- 12/16/2008
So, I let my hair guy get a little out of hand with the layers. Note to self... Not quite so many layers next time.
So, right now I think I resemble a celebrity. Here's my current style:

And here's who it reminds me of...
Funny? Yes. Attractive? Mer...* *I'm actually just having a bit of fun with myself. I'm not one of those girls that cry when they're hair gets a tiny bit butchered. It'll grow back & in the meantime I'll learn new & interesting ways to style it. So there. Labels: Beauty and Makeup

Review: Milani Eyebrow Kit
- 12/11/2008
I am in lust with this little kit! As you may know from reading this blog - I use powder to define my brows, or else you just don't see them. So, while I was in the K to the Mart shopping for double coupon deals I came across this & did a happy dance. No, there was no coupon but I bought it anyway - I'm a sucker for trying new cosmetics, especially all-in-ones as cute as this one.
I am so loving how it has the mini tweezers as well as the sponge tip applicator (for the highlighter) & the slanted brush (of course). And... they're all tucked in a little holder that swings out to show a tiny mirror behind.
I'm also really liking that they threw in a highlighter. Great idea! It's a wonderful way to brighten the eyes & look younger.
I do wish I could replace their 2 powder colors with the one I use that is perfect for me. But, the darker color defines crisply and the two mixed are pretty close to my usual. I haven't tried the lighter color on its own yet, but it something to consider. I think this is a great kit to keep in your purse or for travel. The one thing I am missing is a diminutive eyebrow grooming brush but I guess you just can't have it all. Sigh... Sorry, I couldn't find it on Amazon so I could provde link, but like I said, you can get it at Kmart if you're digging it too.Labels: Beauty and Makeup

Let's Start the Week with a Review
- 11/24/2008
I had a coupon for $1 off any Sally Hansen product last week so I randomly picked her French Manicure Marker/Pen. Let me tell you - I looooooove a good french mani. So crisp, so clean, totally classic & not overdone.
The pen reminds me of one of those metallic pens. You know, where you have to push the tip in until it's saturated with the ink? You have to do that to get it going. So, once I get it going I realize that I'm pretty shaky. I mean, I can do a fair french mani on myself with white polish but this feels totally different & I'm not so sure of myself. It goes on kind of milky & thin & when I try to go over it I end up removing product. So, from far away it looks pretty OK but up close it looks like I used white out on my nails.
To sum up, I think that with some practice this could become a quick way to give yourself passable french tips.

How Not to Look Old - Post Number 4
- 10/06/2008
The experiment is alive & well, in case you were worried.
So, the next chapter covers glasses. Ms. Krupp believes that wire frames are most aging, plastic are better but going without is best. She is definitely correct!
Behold - me in wire frames. These actually were my glasses several years ago & pre-lasik. I look so much older and more mousy.
My current plastic frames are so much cuter! Actually, I wore these back when I wore the other ones but post-lasik I decided to put the new perscription in these ones. I always thought they were a little dark for me but since reading that chapter I'm thinking they are quite chic & statement making. Oh yeah, and smart. They definitely make me look smart! ha, ha!

But, I think this is the best look for me, youthful of not. I think it's nice to see the eyes when possible. I spent a lot of my life with coke-bottle glasses so I am still thrilled to be able to go without. (I only actually need my glasses when it starts to get dark.) It was total science fiction to be able to see clearly again! Ms. Krupp covers loads more on each topic I have covered/will cover. I am merely presenting the main idea of each chapter. By no means let this stop you from buying and/or reading her book. There are lots of tidbits that are helpful to any of us - young or old! I personally can't wait for the chapter on fashion. I always wonder if I dress my age or not and it should be fun to try to dress too young or too old for photo op. Labels: Beauty and Makeup

Perfect Fall Neutral Nail!
- 9/17/2008
I have found the perfect neutral nail for fall. OK, really for any season, but it's just so fashionable to declare new beauty fashion items as "perfect for (fill in the blank)", te-he. So, it's WetNWild from the drugstore. It is a pinky-goldeny champagne color with a bit of shimmer but not so much that it looks like you fell in a box of glitter. The official number of this goodness is 222 - I don't think WNW gives their colors actual names, just numbers.
And - bonus! - it actually has staying power. Yay!Labels: Beauty and Makeup

How Not to Look Old - The Experiment Continues - Part 3
-
So, for all you keeping track of my little (highly unscientific) experiment, here is part 3 of the "How Not to Look Old" experiment: the eyebrows. This "study" is based on the book of the same name. A link is provided in the bibliography at the end of this post. Now, I happen to like how my eyebrows look & I don't really know of any better way to do them. I am intrigued by the stencils she mentioned but I'm really too broke to order any right now. Plus, I want to do this now! I don't want to wait for shipping! So, I decided to compare my face, sans eyebrows (their normal habitat - not there) with my eyebrows after I've done/added them. Please keep in mind - the before photo is completely with no makeup. So, you've been warned: After I've added brows:
I thought about it later & I really should have drawn them on with a colored pencil - that would be the old lady way, right? Oh well, I think me with no makeup is startling enough. Anyway, I think this demonstrates the basic idea that your features should be balanced & that the right eyebrow helps lift your eye & bring attention to it. I think everyone should pay attention to this, no matter what your age.
Thanks for watching!

How Not to Look Old - The Experiment, Part 2
- 9/10/2008
So, next is "lighten up", meaning "get highlights". In your hair. Around your face. (Duh.)
She recommends developing (pun intended) a relationship with your colorist - which should not be the same person as your hair stylist. Hmmmm...
My budget swap in? An on sale box of Revlon Frost & Glow. I believe it was $6.99.
It's the first time I've done the cap thing but thought that would give the most natural looking highlights. Otherwise, I might end up glopping the goo on & creating a skunk stripe.
The cap tested my patience and pain threshold. Well, the pain really wasn't that bad but the hook they give you to pull the hair through the holes may as well be a chopstick. It was next to worthless at hooking & pulling bits of hair.
So, between the tiny amounts of hair I was able to pull through & my taking the cap off before rinsing - I ended up with a very believable highlighted area in front. If I did it again I would do the entire head, use a larger plastic hook & get a friend to help with the back (skipped it - too lazy). And read the directions - there's some trick you do by separating the cap & rinsing then removing the other half, oh, whatever... Oh, and keep it on longer - I admit that I got scared when I looked at it & only kept the crud on for like 20 minutes.
So, drumroll..... The before photo: After photos (couldn't decide which was least offensive, so I included both - bonus!):

So, do I look any younger? Will you be trying it to look a little closer to the womb?
P.S. Here's the link again for the book, in case you want to run towards pre-pubescence! Labels: Beauty and Makeup

How Not to Look Old - The Experiment, Part 1
- 9/03/2008
I picked this book up at the library this past weekend. Instead of just doing a lame book review once I have finished it, I decided I will do an experiment based on the advice within. (An added bonus is that I will be doing this all on a budget - read: dirt cheap.) This chick lists a bunch of different ways of not looking OL (old lady) and instead looking Y&H (young & hip). Interesting... Now, granted, I'm only 30 as opposed to the 40+ women that this book is aimed at. Still, who doesn't want to look younger. Am I right?
So, step one is to "get bangs". Now, I have avoided bangs since high school. Mainly because I don't want to hide half my face. And required maintenance comes into play as well - I wash my hair at night & sleep on it. That is my hair beauty regimen. Period. Well, I got a bug up my butt to take the plunge after reading the second chapter of the book. (The first Chapter determined how high maintenance you are. I rate somewhere in between not at all & a little.) I stopped in at Great Clips and asked for bangs, but not the ones that cover your whole face - these more just frame it & "swoop" off to the side. Total cost = $19 including tip. Below are the results. Me before the miraculous bangs:
Me after: What do you think? I'm thinking I look more mature & polished in the second photo - but not really "younger", possibly older, in fact. I AM totally digging the look though, even though it requires a little more work than before. I use a flat iron on the bangs & on a few other chunks of hair around my head. Overall, I think the time invested is worth it. I am starting to understand those women who put so much more time into their hair. It really makes you feel good.Labels: Beauty and Makeup

The 5 Minute Face
- 8/31/2008
This is a great book for anyone who is A. clueless about applying makeup or B. wants to simplify & streamline their routine. The main looks is great to pull you together for most days & there are a few ones that go beyond that for special occasions. It was a quick read with nice full color photos. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't too wordy while still gettig its point across. And, I can't wait to try out her highlighter tip! I can't wait to highlight my eyes in such a subtle way.
