I'm Back! - 5/31/2008

I am back at home now and ready to get back to normal life.

My store is back online and ready for new listings.

I had planned to get out to see the Sex & the City movie this weekend. I'll see if I get a chance. I've just got to see it on the big screen!

I'm trying to get my house back to normal after unpacking. It can be quite a chore. My husband did do pretty good at keeping the house from going to hell while I was gone so it shouldn't be too hard on me LOL. And he's finishing up our master bathroom remodel - pictures to be posted soon!

I did have a really nice vacation despite attending my brother's funeral the day after I got there. By extending my stay I got to spend time with a lot of friends & family that I hadn't expected to see this year. (Originally, I had planned to eschew my normal vacation due to lack of funds but a funeral like this calls for use of credit.)

It's so hard to realize I won't see him again though. I already miss him so much.

Anyway, I'm back & ready to move forward with life.

Welcome back, Miss Amy! We missed your wit and shopping advice. My feet are your willing model anytime. And please, do check into why professional, low-heeled, fashionable blue shoes are so hard to find (wide width preferably)! I await your response. (And let's do the shopping and lunch thing again . . . maybe when Miss Stacy can join us?)

Friend Chris

Well, my dear, I am glad to be back on the beat. I am planning to post about your problem once I have solved the mystery of the missing blue shoes. Shopping & lunch anytime - you know me!

I'm Not Done Here - 5/22/2008

Just a heads up -

I'm on hiatus for a while & will pick up writing once I get back from an impromptu vacation.

In the meantime, add me to your feedreader & continue to check back! I'll be gone for just over a week and can't wait - I have so many posts saved up in my head. I only hope I will get them down while they are still relevant. Fashion moves so fast LOL.

XOXO,
MissAmy

Girl-Time Shopping on a Saturday - 5/20/2008

I spent a lovely day with my friend Chris out shopping & lunching this past Saturday.

We only went to a few stores but the fact that we both got things we absolutely needed was very fulfilling (me - bras, she - shoes). And then after that we had a wonderful lunch at Calistoga Bakery.

We were in Payless at one point & I definitely had to notice that they are stepping up their style, by leaps & bounds. (On a side note: They better - I read this morning that they will be hiking their prices by about 15% next year.)

My friend was so good as to model a couple styles for the blog. Such cute things they had! We both loved the ones shown in the photos.

The blue pair was just a gorgeous color of blue - unfortunately the heel was too high for my friend. (Note to self & all of you - friend needs low-heeled but beautiful blue shoes for work environment. Post to follow once I investigate further.)

The second pair was a great deep green color. The extra interesting thing about these was how the wedge was covered by the outside of the shoe. Unusual design feature! Loved it!

P.S. This style was only $8. I think my friend is going back! Can't blame her, these are hot!

Here's a link to the online Payless clearance. The green shoes aren't on there so you'll have to go to the store for these, but there are lots of other styles starting at $5. Go forth and purchase!

Lesson in Proportion & Length - 5/15/2008

On the right we have the before photo or this morning's original outfit.

Drab & boxy!

Notice that the top hits me right above a major problem area - my hip bubble - and highlights said problem. Also, the top is not nearly fitted enough and so I look like I have a bit of a marshmallow middle. Not to mention the light on top/dark on bottom combination cut my right in the middle (which I don't need - I'm only 5'3"!)

Besides hiding my good stuff (waist, chest) and showing off the bad (hips) this outfit is also very boring... Light on top, dark on bottom, pretty straight up and down.

So, I added two pieces to jazz it up a bit & make me feel cuter.

I put on a sweater. This sweater is actually a trapeze cut so even the sweater alone did a lot of nothing for me. I actually wrapped it like a wrap top and then belted it with a wide black belt.

Behold...

Due to the belt & sweater combo I look thinner, curvier, less short and all around much more put together. I even noticed that the picture itself is skinnier LOL.

That is your lesson in proportion & length today.

Thanks for joining me!

Ebay Find - Bohemian Cape-like Blouse from BCBG -

I found this blouse on ebay today. I absolutely adore it! Just picture it with crisp white jeans or even some flowy linen or khaki pants. Oh, oh, oh! Or contrasted with a sharp black pencil skirt. Oh, the possibilities!

The bidding is starting at $7.99 & no one has bid yet! Here's the link if you're digging it like I am.

MissAmy's Fashion Philosophy - Part 2 - 5/13/2008

In high school my outfit choices were greatly commented on – negatively & positively. I would have made many a worst dressed list had I been famous. But at least I was original – wearing a huge green doily over a black catsuit, a swath of material as a skirt with a bodysuit and harness boots, etc… And many people noted that I never wore the same thing twice – maybe because I didn’t limit myself to just jeans & t-shirts (just sayin’).

Once I began working I mostly bought things from the outlet stores I worked at – Ralph Lauren and then later DKNY – because I wore them to work and loved to! It was here that I encountered quality clothing and found out that Ralph makes some pretty funky things by the way. I became a mix master of low and high-ish (Ralph and Donna aren’t exactly Dolce & Chanel, you know?)

One point of interest was during a job review while at the Polo outlet. They actually mentioned that I didn't dress quite right for the store. They meant that I mixed it up too much with Ralph's funkier creations & didn't wear khakis & a button-down like the example they pointed me to. Well, whatever...

I also got a heads up before I started a new job at DKNY. My future boss had been a little freaked out by an outfit that she saw me in at a friend's wedding. She commented to someone I worked with at Ralph who gave me the heads up. I admit, I didn't funk it up as much once I was at DKNY. But Donna's things were just so luxe I didn't feel the need.

So, soon to come, MissAmy moves to Florida & starts her new life. Stay tuned to learn about how she coped with spending limits!
P.S. The photo above is me wearing a skirt as a top! I totally dig it!

I'm Soooo Tired! - 5/12/2008

Ugh, I know this is off-topic but I am so tired. I think I may be coming down with something as well as having a packed schedule for the next month or so. Mostly either fun things - lunch & shopping w/ friends, Sex & the City movie coming out - or things I've been needing to do - visit the dermatologist, get my car up to snuff. So I will be happy to accomplish them. I just hope I don't hit a wall before finishing all of the to-do's.

I even have to grocery shop on the way home tonight - something I avoid at all costs. I simply did not have enough time in the day yesterday.

I did however (and this is where it gets relevant) get all the photos taken of all the new goodies for the store, which I will be doling out one by one. I'm so stingy! But I still need to resize & save the photos in their proper place & format. Another to-do on the list...

Well, tonight I am doing nothing but shopping (for groceries only!) and then going home to prepare dinner. And showering. But that is IT! :)

Have a great Monday & I hope I will have more to say/show you soon!

Teaser - New Store Stock - 5/11/2008

I shopped for the store yesterday. This is a teaser post since I don't have photos just yet. Sorry! I'm just so excited I wanted to pass it on.

I found all sorts of goodies - Donald J. Pliner shoes, Donna Karan linen jacket, Tory Burch polo shirt (coudn't believe my luck!) and loads more, many unknown brands which are totally on trend - ikat anyone?

I will be photographing, hopefully today, and then will be slowly adding the items one by one. I promise, I do this not to tease, but because I only have so much time to devote per day. I will be adding posts about some of the items as well, so watch this space!

FIT's "Sole Desire: The Shoes of Christian Louboutin" - 5/09/2008

Just a quick note to my fellow online lovers of everything stylish -

The museum at FIT is running their "Sole Desire: The Shoes of Christian Louboutin" through April 19th.

You can see a little online here. Or if you are one of the lucky ones, you could visit the exhibit. In the flesh!

Latest TJMaxx Adventure! - 5/08/2008

I stopped at TJMaxx on my way home last night. I just had a hankerin'. It's been a while.

There are 2 items that I am sure you will think are just a bit questionable, even when you take into account my fairly eclectic style. I can never define it. One day I'm break-dancy the next I'm classy.

When you see these pieces you might think I've gone crazy. But I've had this idea, see. I am going to do something with these bits so stay tuned! We'll see if I can bring to fruition what is in my brain...

The one below looks cute in this photo, but there are major pulls all over the fabric. I don't have a definite picture of what I will do with it yet. I will be forced to be very innovative. Hopefully.

Yes, I have lost my mind. I think there is something that could be great about this hippy-dippy linen & embroidered vest. The brand is even awful. It's "Art Wear" or something like that. Ick!

I picked up a few other really cute things as well - a Tignanello purse which is a really great grey/brown taupe color & which looks very "Coach"-y, A new pair of sunglasses, a couple re-usable bags that read "The new It Bag" on the side. You can see these in MyStyleDiary under Cool Finds.

So, stay tuned to see what I can do with these pieces. Also, I will be shopping for the store this weekend, shopping with girlfriends the weekend after and Part 2 of my fashion philosophy will be up soon as well.

Have a great day, dears!

MissAmy's Fashion Philosophy - Part 1 - 5/06/2008

You may be wanting to know a little more about this girl that is writing this blog & how she thinks about fashion & style. Are we destined to be BFF or not so much?

I am not a fashionista – I don’t have the income (or the time) to be focused on what to wear solely to impress other fashionistas - especially since I don't know any in the flesh. (And besides the fact that I live in a fairly casual resort town & so tend to be less than over the top.) I do envy them their single mindedness, search for the new and many creative blunders and successes. I also don't feel that true high fashion is really available to some of us - mainly due to cash constraints, oh those pesky bills.

My thinking on fashion & style is more about making do or finding something great or absurdly beautiful (or absurdly oddball) for less. I’m very much a make do-er but I still want to look good & be current. This calls for major creativity. (This thinking follows me in many aspects of life.)

For most of my school life my mom & I bought my school clothes at garage sales or they were passed on to us by people we knew. We would get these great garbage bags of clothes that we would go through & then pass on to other families that could use them. The things I found were beautiful and special to me but required some originality to wear. The best was when you found some coveted item – Guess sweatshirt, anyone? - that anyone else would covet.

Later on we graduated to mixing in Kmart blue-light specials. We would go nuts & put a giant heap of super clearanced clothes on lay-away. The day you made that final payment was magical. You would bring home practically a whole new wardrobe.

At this point I didn't have a clear idea for a future career. Modeling appealed... but I'm now only 5'3" - good thing I didn't have my heart set on it, right?

Stay tuned - we haven't even gotten to high school yet...

P.S. In the photo on the right: BCBG top from thrift, $1 linen sweater vest from TJMaxx, Ralph Lauren - probably from TJMaxx, Carlos Santana heels from the thrift.

Organize Your Bag! - 5/05/2008

I was over at BagBliss.com reading about a new way to organize your bag - the Transfer Bag. If I had this nifty product I could change bags to match my outfit. (Now I merely change once per week - I crave handbag change!)

Her post on the topic inspired me to dig out a clipping I saved from a while back. (I keep a file of "Things I might buy" besides my many other clippings files - interior design, painting inspiration, the list goes on...) This clipping was about Joey Junior's Purse Mate. I think I prefer this version of the organization of the Transfer Bag. Photos are shown for both regular & mini sizes. You can buy one (or more) on their site - JoeyJunior.com. I'm being very tempted by them right now!

The one from BagBliss's site is more for if you want to carry a giant bag and then keep all your need-at-hand necessities in one. I used to call this a "satellite bag". I would carry a giant tote or purse that resembles luggage to work but then pull out my "satellite bag" when it was time to jaunt out for lunch. Very handy. I don't see the Purse Mate functioning like that even though I prefer that kind of organization over another, smaller purse to put in the bigger purse.

What do you think?

Project Runway, Season 2, Episode 1 - 5/01/2008

Alright. I'm behind. Bad, fashionista, bad! I know, I know.

I just now starting watching Season 2 of Project Runway. You heard me - Season 2! I only just watched the first season within the last year. And love it by the way! And it's actually kind of hilarious that I am so clueless about who actually won. BTW - Jesus man won the first season - LOVE him! Unfortunately I already am well aware of who won Season 4. Damn the media and my new awareness of it!

(Aside: I shun TV. This does not make me a better person, however. It just saves me a lot of time that I devote to even more inane tasks. Like making lists of things I need to do with my time, etc...)

So, back to the Runway. I am happy that the cattiness is kept to a minimum (so far), unlike other reality shows that I refuse to acknowledge. Even though a little is fun - I admit it.

So, first episode highlight - my version: Magnet girl!
I was really worried that they would axe her on the first episode. BUT I did guess that they would find her change-it dress "intriguing". Luckily intriguing enough to keep her on!
That dress was trying to jump off the model all the way down the runway! I was in shock watching it.
But I love that little girl. She is definitely the nicest, most real person on this one. She is such a nerd - I am totally feeling it!
