Androgynous But in a Totally Wearable Way
- 4/29/2008
I was inspired (surprisingly) by a photo in Life & Style magazine of Samantha Ronson and Lindsay Lohan.
The article was surmising whether they are an item or not. It did a small spread where it noted that Lindsay is taking on Samantha's style. Interestingly, even though they were wearing similar clothing, Lindsay tended to have a more girly spin to her's - heels, short cut-offs, etc... while Samantha is, to my eye, extremely androgynous. There is something about her style & the way she carries herself that is very boy-girl. It's very hard for me to stop looking at photos of her, there's just something... very weird, anyway... No, Lindsay, I'm not trying to steal your woman. (Aside: I hear she's very possessive!)
I just got inspired by this one photo (wish I could find it online - sorry!) where Samantha is wearing a leather jacket over a striped shirt and striped half gloves (or something) on her hands. The shirt had blue stripes, the 1/2 gloves bright pink. Plus black Chuck Taylors.
So, I decided to try my hand and to the left is my result. This is much more forgiving and wearable. We can't all be DJ's!Labels: Shopping and Fashion

I Am Digging Ruffles!
- 4/28/2008
OK, IAmFashion posted recently about the beautiful Lanvin show that was all about the ruffles. I am so on board. And since this blog is about following fashion on a budget, I want to point you to the ruffled pieces I have in the store right now – at very reasonable prices.
The first is a gorgeous ruffles Ralph Lauren halter top. I am in love with this piece! It is so delicate but still strong – the color is smashing! You can buy it now at $20 plus shipping.
Secondly, there is an even less expensive option – a Ninety top with a smaller ruffle detail on the front. This one will even work at work. This one is a very wallet friendly $3 plus shipping!
I hope you don’t mind my blatant self-promotion – but it’s not about me. It’s about helping you find ways to wear the trends without breaking the bank!
I will be keeping you apprised of other auctions (other people's too LOL) I see that I think are worthwhile so keep checking back!Labels: MissAmy's Shop, Shopping and Fashion

More 80’s? When Will This End?
- 4/24/2008
You know, I thought it was crazy when I started to see leggings under skirts and on their own again. Then came tight jeans, with and without zippers at the ankle. Those black rubber bracelets have been around lately. SheFinds even brought the latest crimping craze to light. But when will it end? This is ridiculous!
Even while I wait for the demise of this trend WWD is reporting that “Designers work an Eighties vibe for fall…” Ack!Labels: Shopping and Fashion

Relay of Life 2008
- 4/23/2008
I participated in the Relay for Life over the weekend with the company I work for.
My boss-lady is actually a cancer survivor & I'm glad she's still around. Besides the fact that she employs me, I also consider her a very good friend and I'm glad I've gotten to know her. Her father-in-law is also a survivor while his wife, unfortunately, is no longer with us due to the disease. So, this is obviously an important cause for them and, by extension, to me as well.
I've never done a Relay for Life, or really any other fundraiser before. I expected it to be pretty boring but it turned out to be really fun. There were tents everywhere with games & so many different kinds of food - yum! Also, there were many events that were unique to the relay to honor the survivors, the lost and the caretakers.
I dressed for comfort & most others did as well. I always start thinking at any event like this about how I should have dressed, how to be comfy & cute despite the sun and the walking and being in the outdoors - you get my meaning. I end up critiquing everyone else's looks (and mine when I see myself in the mirror) to think about how they (or mine) could have been done better.
But to be honest, outdoor, walking a lot type events - concerts, theme parks, fundraisers - tend to be tricky to dress for.
Only one outfit stood out to me and she is pictured above to the right. I love the hat - so practical in the strong Florida sun. And the clothes are basic but look comfortable & lightweight. If you want to see what I wore - so boring! but practical - click here to see me in MyStyleDiary.
But here is a post that made me happy over at WhoWhatWearDaily. I'm glad to know someone else was thinking about this. And I will try to take their tips. I so love the shorts outfit!Labels: Life

Tees for Spring!
-
This is just a quick update on what is new to the store today. I just listed two very spring-y t-shirts starting at a penny! The first is a brand new Juicy Couture with tags. It has never been worn. I love how the black graffiti is splashed around on the front & very messy.
The second is a more demure Lilly Pulitzer in bright pink with a v-neck.
Please click here to find them in my store! Labels: MissAmy's Shop, Shopping and Fashion

My Name is MissAmy and I Am a Shopaholic
- 4/22/2008
OK, I've been trying really hard to only shop to stock my online store. I fell off the wagon this weekend.
I had gotten a $50 gift visa card that came in the mail - it was a rebate thing. So, after the Relay for Life I decided to treat myself to a Marshalls outing. I normally don't shop for the store at Marshalls BTW because they don't have the really high end stuff that TJMaxx has had lately & they are not as inexpensive as the wonderful thrift stores I frequent. So, anyway, Marshalls called. I always pile loads of stuff in my cart and then go through it all to see what I really need/want. This is my plunder from that day! The tank is the brightest, richest pink ever - it's encroaching on neon. The embroidered panel is sewn through with gold thread, then attached to a cotton panel the same shape and then finally sewed onto the top. I love the softness, the drape & the one-of-a-kind feel it has. See how I wore it today. This skirt from The Limited was too cute to pass up. It is a really lightweight cotton with great colorblocking at the bottom. This will be great for spring/summer! I had to narrow the shoe take down to two pair. Shown below are the Bongo pair on the left - all manmade, but I don't care on this pair since they are a totally unbelievable shade of pearly silver. No one would believe leather comes in this color, so I don't care. Especially as they are really comfy with their wwedge heel. The second pair is Me Too black leather flats - toe is neither too square, round or pointy. I could have used a size down, I realized when I wore them yesterday but they are still comfy & cute! The last piece I got is this gorgeously cut blazer from Nine West. It's my favorite color - a dark grey and the cut is divine. Also, even though it is a size 8 - tiny for me! - it fits! Amazing. But on top of that it is so flatteringly cut I feel like a size 8! So, all in all, it all costed more than the $50 but not too much more. Essentially, I haven't been that naughty at all. Ha! I'm sure I'll get up to some creative things with these goodies but I did play with them on Sunday, so cruise on over to MyStyleDiary to see what fun I had with them so far!

The Slouchy Blazer Craze
- 4/21/2008
Everything old is new. Goes around comes around. Etc... I was inspired by a new post over at IAmFashion this past week. She was talking about the new longer, looser blazers silhouette she has noticed lately and how she may need yet another black blazer. I can so relate. When I read her post I think my mind set changed. I now want a slouchy blazer!
The Style Bubble has also been noticing the resurgance of loose, slouchy blazers worn with high waisted trousers. She always has great insights & is fun to read. These observations must have been on my brain because I was drawn to similar bits when I was out shopping for new stock for my store this weekend. So, I have great news for anyone wanting to try the look without spending an arm and a leg on YSL runway fare! I have some of these coveted items now in the store. I have two great jackets, probably actually from the early 90's from which the trend comes. I nabbed a great bright royal blue wool blazer by Christian Dior. It's really a nice weight & will be wonderfully slouchy on the right frame. On me it's more formfitting, too bad. I'm blessed in the "more to love" category.
Secondly is a great "go-with-all" black Dana Buchman. It's a wonderful rayon mix. Lightweight but will work anytime of the year. Just be warned - both have shoulder pads! I'm sure a skilled tailor can remove or you may want to ride the boxy wave... Also, swing by and check out the other new things - I discovered a wealth of dress pants. You know, you can never have too many! Labels: MissAmy's Shop, Shopping and Fashion

Eye Candy by Linda Mason
- 4/20/2008

I just got this little gem & I absolutely love it. It is by Linda Mason, one of my favorite makeup artists - remember Sun Sign Makeovers? That book brought fantasy to makeup. I didn't subscribe to the sun sign idea but I loved how fun the "looks" were. Now comes this new one from Linda who is known for her "creative, freestyle makeup". And it reminded my of another of my favorite places to look for inspiration - Miss K's blog over at Aromaleigh! If you haven't visited I highly recommend it. The colors, the creativity - it's a makeup/makeover fan's dream. The latest post is an excellent example of the photos readers send in of their own looks. Check it out! Labels: Books

The Worst Products Ever Awards

Sally Hansen No Chip Acrylic Top Coat
I actually bought this because it was recommended in a magazine, probably Lucky. I’ve given this top coat a couple separate chances since I usually adore Sally Hansen’s products. They usually do exactly what they are supposed to. This one must be the renegade of the bunch. Despite being named “No Chip” it insists on chipping in the most bizarre ways I’ve ever seen. Huge swaths peel right off or chips appear – in the middle of the nail, not at the tip. Also, chips have appeared on my toenails – which never chip. They fade slowly but I’ve never known them to chip. I’ll just have to go back to Sally’s other nail top coats – they actually work. Pictured at right: nails on the day after painting them!
Bic Soleil Razor
I switched to this razor out of thrift. I was so sick of spending $10 or more on replacement razors for my Venus & this was on sale at Walgreens. Plus regular price on the replacements wasn’t bad at all. Well, I did notice that my legs were only smooth for a day (as opposed to the other razor which left them smooth for at least 2). Also, I kept seeing armpit stubble. Um, when I used the Venus I never saw this. Keep in mind I shave them every day, so this is truly bizarre. Obviously, this was an inferior razor. I drew the line when I was reaching up while painting our bathroom and my husband asked if Little Richard was hiding in my armpit. Now, I’m back to Venus – but I am giving their least expensive kit a try… No photo of Little Richard, sorry!

I Am Appalled – Catty Couture
-
I don’t know that I am so on board with all the latest celebrities turned fashion designers. You know what - make that I am so NOT on board with it. I’m even iffy on high end designers partnering with Target. (Although I fully recognize that I may be the only one not excited about that particular trend.)
Anyway, this latest is the worst! Guess who is at it this time? Click here if you dare! Kiss Me Stace has reported on the most appalling new line by a celebrity yet.

Knickers? Hammer pants? Pretty?
- 4/08/2008
There have been a lot of musings lately around the blogospere re: hammer pants - another awful fad I thought I would never see revived. (See StyleDash, Fashionista, etc... ) The mind reels.
However, The Sartorialist captured this girl that actually makes them look, dare I say it?, pretty.
Another interesting bit, for me, is that I stumbled upon a pair of Alice Temperley for Target pants on my last shopping trip that totally remind me of this photo. They are in my store now - brand new with tags - & are a chic combo of navy & black. I think someone will really be able to work them & I’d love the see the result. If it is anything like this photo they have some severe style!Labels: MissAmy's Shop

Clothing Care 101 - The First of Many Installations...
- 4/07/2008

Quick deodorant smear fix from SheFinds – rub the fabric together over the smudge, rubbing your tights or hose on the marks Got ink on your (washable) clothing? – spray it with hairspray & rub together, then wash Remove anything oily from fabric – Dust with baby powder, let it soak up the blotch, toss in the wash. Magic, I swear! Lipstick stains on washable fabric – dab rubbing alcohol on spot, soak stain in warm water & dishwashing liquid, soak 10 minutes, rub in & wash as usual How to machine wash beaded or embroidered clothing (as long as it’s washable) – turn inside out, toss is pillow case, knot closed as close to the item as possible so there’s less room for it to move around in, wash on delicate with gentle detergent & lay flat to dry. Fixing underarm discoloration on white clothes – drop an aspirin in the wash once the basin has filled, allow the wash to complete. Labels: Shopping and Fashion

Yellow! Yay!
- 4/06/2008
Yellow seems to be everywhere right now. It is the pick of the litter when it comes to the citrus hues that are hot right now.
Smarter came up with a great list of picks to brighten your wardrobe up for spring.
I have one more to add (shameless plug for my store follows): Now may I interest you in a quirky vest? No one else will have anything like it, I swear!
See it on here.Labels: MissAmy's Shop, Shopping and Fashion
