Sculptural Heels - 3/31/2008

I know that everyone has noticed the new trend of highly decorative shoes with out-there heels. Who could miss those Prada's? Anyway, Manolo noticed. And he is here to guide us. He counsels that we find similar sculptural heels but ones that are well done as so many are not (Prada excluded here).

So, I kept his advice in mind while shopping to stock my store this weekend. Lo and behold I uncovered a couple pair that are really quite fab!

(I seem to have shopping esp - I once dreamt that I found a black leather DKNY bag at a thrift. Not much later, I did. I still have the bag. Another time... Nevermind, I guess that's a whole other post....)

Anyway, there are two new pairs in the store and I think they are truly fab!

The first - a pair by Stuart Weitzman. Their leather soles do not show wear (aside from maybe on carpet, anyway). They are a glamourous deep pewter patent with a squarish toe. The heel is very sculptural indeed, in a very sleek shiny black. De-lish!

The other pair are Casadei and are a truly beautiful & balanced combination of a barely there & very curvy single strap across the foot and a lovely faux bamboo heel. Very nice indeed.

I hope these help someone to try out the trend for less. Those trends can be tricky, I know. Especially on the wallet!

Mineral Powders - Loosed vs. Pressed - 3/28/2008

Forgive me, I've only become aware of mineral makeup in the past few weeks. I'm always behind on lifestyle trends - eating organic, surfing the internet, exercising... Anyway, I can't stand feeling makeup on my face all day & once made aware of the fact that mineral foundation blends right into your face, I had to try it out.

My first attempt was with Jane Be Pure Mineral Makeup. It's a loose powder with a built in dispenser. I like the formulation & it does indeed blend with my very own face, however, the dispensing method left me wanting more. Literally. Not enough comes out of that stupid spongy applicator. When I figured out how to remove the sponge part & dip right into the fine powder I saw that it was too much! When I tap the brush off the powder goes everywhere and ends up being cakey on my face.

My second try was CoverGirl TruBlend Minerals Pressed Powder. I use a brush to apply & burnish in and a narrow sponge to add some below my eyes. Perfecto!

I am now a mineral convert. Today, I bought both an eyeshadow and a concealer - in adorable tiny containers. They're Loreal Bare Naturale. I didn't really NEED them but there was a sale...

Queen of Babble -

I was drawn into this book especially due to the main character's interest in vintage fashion, as well as the fact that she is a truly stylish girl from my home state of Michigan. Odd, for a heroine, I think. Oh, and that it takes place in France - oh bliss!

She also shares a possibly useful tip - the character claims that soaking a rust stain in a water/cream of tartar mixture removes the stain. I will be trying that out as soon as I find some rust stains! Do try this at home & tell me the results!

Oh, and while searching Amazon for my link I see there is a whole series of these. Will I be reading more? Oui, oui!

P.S. I adore the Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella! Are any of you fellow fans disappointed by the early photos of Isla Fischer in character?

French Style - 3/23/2008

I was watching He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not the other night - a wonderfully twisted movie about a slightly crazy girl (Audrey Tatou) who has a major crush. It occured to me that, no wonder she was a little crazy & possible depressed - she had been wearing the same 2 outfits for much of the movie :) However, even though she repeated outfits, they were lovely and fit her in such a stylish way. P.S. If you haven't seen the movie, please do. It is so worth it!

Speaking of that enigmatic frenchness, StyleBubble had something to say about it the other day & I had fun reading her post. I guess my view is that it isn't the clothing itself but the style that French women use to put it all together. An attitude. I guess we all just need to find our own attitude!

From Gym to Work -

I have another style conundrum. I just started going to the gym in earnest again and have discovered that the transition from gym clothes to work clothes is a pretty complicated one.

It forces me to carry multiple bags and to remain sticky all through the day as my current gym has no shower. This week I am upgrading to a different branch of the same gym which has showers, so that will take care of the stickiness. But, my problem is still there - how to be sporty at the gym and then chic at work.

I am fortunate because I work in a very casual environment, so I decided that on those days I will keep it simple. A non-wrinklable dress with flip-flops and a cardi seem to be as simple as it gets. Also, if I have a client meeting, I will dress it up a bit with a jacket & a heel.

I am curious how the rest of you out there deal with this conundrum though. I'd love to hear your creative ways to deal with the nomadic life we seem to lead nowadays. I feel like I carry my house on my back sometimes, with all the varied things I do on any given day.

Please leave a comment and clue me in!

Carrying My Life Around in My Purse and My Lunch Bag and My Gym Bag, Etc... - 3/21/2008

During this past week I have realized that I seem to carry everything around with me. It's all stuff I need but it requires about 4 bags to handle it all. The list follows:

Purse (which tends to resemble luggage) contains:

  • Coach wristlet with small necessaries - mirror, nail clippers, claritin, cards, tweezers...

  • A truly gigantic mp3 player w/ headphones - it does hold all my music though

  • The drawstring bag for the headphones

  • Pain reliever in a little mint tin

  • Gum

  • A pen

  • At least one hair-holder-backer

  • Weight Watchers paraphenalia - food journal, point slider, weigh record

  • Nail file - full size

  • Sunglasses

  • Lip gloss - more than one

  • Glasses case w/ glasses

  • Cell phone

  • Notebook

  • Wallet & keys

  • My gigantic digital Olympus camera

Gym bag:

  • Apparel - yoga pants, tee, socks, sports bra

  • Entertainment - magazines

  • Refreshment - water

  • Footwear - sneakers

Lunch bag (there are actually two, ahem):

#1 - fabric bag w/ handles

  • Weight Watchers books - so I can eat wherever I want whilst knowing my points

  • Mix-ins - to make water even more tasty

  • Snacks - granola bars, etc...

#2 - plastic bag - at least I'm recycling!:

  • Salad

  • Soup

  • Turkey sandwich

  • Pudding

  • And additional snacks - esp ones requiring refrigeration

  • Possibly a frozen meal

OK, OK! I know - way too much stuff. Must purge, combine & conquer. Luckily I drive to work and don't commute via subway. Can't imagine schlepping all this on public transport!

I've considered a few options. Earlier this week I gave up the fabric lunch bag & put the stuff from it either in the gym bag (don't always carry this though) or in the plastic bag with the other food (food may leak & ruin books - ick!).

Also, thought of combining purse & gym bag by using larger bag. No matter how large of a purse I use though, those sneakers aren't fitting into it.

And, yes I should simplify & carry an all-in-one phone (camera, mp3, cell) but I want a high quality camera & a minimum of 60gb of music. Also, I can downscale the size of the items but don't really want to invest in loads of electronics right now.

Help? Anyone?

What next? A new direction for my entrepreneurial energy! - 3/12/2008

Well, I thought I had given up this blog as it pertains to shopping which I am too broke to do lately. But... I ended up in a shop yesterday and realized that I don't think I can ever truly give it up. I always want to be in there finding newer and better stuff.

So, I am going to try to make money doing just what I love - shopping! I am a total expert at scoring a deal on anything and everything and I just happen to live in a very wealthy community. The finds can be really great here! So, I think I am going to open an ebay store so that I can sell all my great finds - used or vintage - without the hassle of setting up an e-commerce website.

I'll probably eventually move my vanity site to a directory and add a new site just for the fashions I find on my hunt at the current domain.

I can keep you all updated of my progress and of all the new deals to come. Also, I want to continue blogging about trends and celebrity fashion, as well as all my other obsessions when it comes to dressing myself.

Wish me luck on my new venture!
