MissAmy's Fashion Philosophy - Part 1
- Tuesday, May 6, 2008
You may be wanting to know a little more about this girl that is writing this blog & how she thinks about fashion & style. Are we destined to be BFF or not so much?
I am not a fashionista – I don’t have the income (or the time) to be focused on what to wear solely to impress other fashionistas - especially since I don't know any in the flesh. (And besides the fact that I live in a fairly casual resort town & so tend to be less than over the top.) I do envy them their single mindedness, search for the new and many creative blunders and successes. I also don't feel that true high fashion is really available to some of us - mainly due to cash constraints, oh those pesky bills.
My thinking on fashion & style is more about making do or finding something great or absurdly beautiful (or absurdly oddball) for less. I’m very much a make do-er but I still want to look good & be current. This calls for major creativity. (This thinking follows me in many aspects of life.)
For most of my school life my mom & I bought my school clothes at garage sales or they were passed on to us by people we knew. We would get these great garbage bags of clothes that we would go through & then pass on to other families that could use them. The things I found were beautiful and special to me but required some originality to wear. The best was when you found some coveted item – Guess sweatshirt, anyone? - that anyone else would covet.
Later on we graduated to mixing in Kmart blue-light specials. We would go nuts & put a giant heap of super clearanced clothes on lay-away. The day you made that final payment was magical. You would bring home practically a whole new wardrobe.
At this point I didn't have a clear idea for a future career. Modeling appealed... but I'm now only 5'3" - good thing I didn't have my heart set on it, right?
Stay tuned - we haven't even gotten to high school yet...
P.S. In the photo on the right: BCBG top from thrift, $1 linen sweater vest from TJMaxx, Ralph Lauren - probably from TJMaxx, Carlos Santana heels from the thrift.
