Favorite Magazines
- 8/31/2007
I was thinking lately about my favorite fashion magazines. I have come to the conclusion that I am definitely not a fashionista. I no longer worship at the altar of Vogue & WWD. Sometimes I wish I were that sophisticated, but I really am more into wearable fashion right now. Maybe it's my age or that I live in a pretty conservative community.
Anyway, I thought about what my favorites are now & thought I would share.
Lucky is my absolute favorite. Occasionally I purchase their sister mag Domino, but I do not devour it at nearly the same rate as their fashion mag. I love that they give you practical ways to wear the new trends and that they have information on pricing & where to purchase the items on their pages.
I also read People's Stylewatch voraciously. They offer real life ideas even though they use celebrities as their examples. I want to be as stylish as them & this feeds my need. I also read Life & Style as my main gossip rag because they highlight a lot of fashion ideas & trends. Leave a comment & share your favorites!

The latest on Ebay
- 8/29/2007
Well, my auctions are just about to close. It looks like someone got a great deal on that unique DKNY black straw skirt. I hope they wear it to a luau! I've got some great things up for sale this week. Hopefully someone will score with this stuff! In the shoe department I have a unique colored pair of White Mountain sandals - they're like a mustard. Also, on offer is a pair of Cole Haan G Series Nike Air black leather sandals/flip flops. Great pair, someone will get lucky with these. Only one purse this week - a very useful Adrienne Vittadini. It's perfect for going out since you can wear it slung across the body, messanger style, but it's still dressy enough with it's heavy metal gold chains. On the basics front there is a pair of yoga pants, a pair of GAP khakis, a GAP drawstring top. Lastly, there is another great piece from DKNY Donna Karan - it's an awesome combination of skirt & shorts - don't you dare call it a skort! It's so much more sophisticated than that. If you don't believe me, check it out.

Wanted: Lapis Lazuli
- 8/28/2007

Um, it's that time of the year again. It's when I start hunting down the next year's anniversary gift. Next year (9!!!!) the stone is Lapis Lazuli. We got married in June, but I like to start well ahead to find the perfect piece. I will admit to striking out the past 3 years because price has become an object, so I've been less than happy with my picks. I just can't picture paying all year for one piece of jewelry anymore. (Oh, my husband picks out my birthday presents himself & always does an awesome job. He picks better things than I would. But for some reason, I am the one that hunts down my anniversary gift. Maybe because I'm adhering to the gemstone anniversary list & so am pretty picky about what I get. Shrug.) What I look for in anniversary jewelry is something that I know I will wear forever. I would also like it to have worth, in case some day I am forced to flee my home with only my jewels - ha, ha. Lately price is an issue, like I said before. But it also seems that the less I spend on something the less it is worth to me. Ignorant, I know, but that's how it feels. So, I need to find a balance of worth and price. Well here are some of the pieces that are in the running so far. Top photo is the inlaid horn necklace from Peggy Li Creations. This is the front runner. And while I realize the horn/tusk necklace was very trendy and now is kind of over, I also know that I have a couple of this style & I still wear and love them. And I know not to expect perfection from the piece since it's kind of a rough style. That was the mistake I made when I ordered my amethyst earrings off link (I think that was anniversary year 6). I was very disappointed by those. The next photo up there on the right is a Petal Prong Ring from HSN. I really dig it but am worried I am over the kind of tongue-in-chic giant silly rings, since I've bought a couple cheap on ebay & gotten kind of done with that look. Lastly there is a really cute handmade necklace in the Solstice Jewlery shop on Etsy. I love the design & everything about this except that it is in gold. Granted it does look like a faded gold, which maybe I could live with. Hmm. Well, anyway, if anyone has any suggestions, please leave a comment!

The Latest Plunder
- 8/24/2007
Last week I stopped at TJMaxx before my yoga class and scored in the clearance purse section. I ended up with a great wallet/clutch/bag by Hype. I snagged it for $10. It can be worn on the shoulder, across the body, as a clutch (by removing the strap) and even as a belt bag since there are loops on the back.
I also had my paws on a Jessica Simpson purse that I really liked in a dark grey. I dropped it immediately once I saw the next pretty, though. An Echo bag!!! The original price on the Echo tag was $178, but I got it for $25. I could barely breath! It's a really cool mix of a tone on tone houndstooth pattern along with the velvet and chain shoulder straps and great silver tone buckle. It's amazingly slouchy and is just really polished but mildy subversive with the black vinyl of the houndstooth.
Then, over the weekend, when I was supposed to be running oil on my trim and doors, I snuck out to Marshalls (as well as Borders, but that is another story). There I picked up a 3 pack of white v-neck mens t-shirts for $15, a classic blue Izod oxford button-down for $10 and a really shapely For the Republic linen jacket. I worked the outfit for today around it. The jacket was originally $68, but I paid $15. I really like how it works with my shape. It's a very pretty indigo color. I wore it over a burgundy cami from Target that has a beaded detail at the neck. The jeans are Michael Kors, from one of the discount stores. The shoes are LizFlex (which has some surprisingly hip styles) in dark brown. I ended up at TJMaxx again last night - a friend and I had dinner & shopping night. I reunited with the Jessica Simpson bag & bought it this time (it was $8 cheaper). I also got a Guess Collection (Original Guess price was $210, my price $30) I have had my eye on as well as a surprise deal - an Ellen Tracy for $15.
The Ellen Tracy was a pleasant surprise. It's a very dark eggplant color & is very minimally styled. There are no giant obnoxious logos anywhere. The markings are very subtle. The name is embossed on the flesh tone strip of leather on the interior of the bag. It's also etched on each side of the hardware that holds the straps on.
It is very well divided up as well. Having 3 main compartments, the middle zippered. Then the typical cell phone, sunglasses and zippered pockets. All in all a very solid and classy bag. The Guess is the nice Guess Collection, not the usual vinyl tripe I've gotten used to seeing from them. This one is a super soft pale green lizard textured leather. The straps can be switched out to either be a longer, thinner across the body style or a wider, studded shoulder strap. It's smallish inside but has good pockets for cell, other. I would call the color celadon. Once I was home I realized it matches perfectly with a pair of Franco Sarto suede pointy toe kitten heels I have. Boy, was I psyched. My husband, strangely, was not as enthused. He just didn't "get it". Oh, the Jessica Simpson bag. It was originally $168. It's a wonderful dark tone of grey (one of my favorites!) with off-white faux lambswool trim. It's a bit bulky & very wintery. I don't know if I can wait to carry it though. This one too, is very well divided inside. I think purse designers are finally learning that we need organization. All the ones I've gotten lately are really well done. Although, one favorite comes to mind that's not so good at it - Lamarthe. I love their bags with their quirky convertible straps. But they seem to usually have only one small pocket inside. Well, I haven't seen any lately, so maybe they have improved as well. One can always hope.

Welcome...
- 8/20/2007
I'm so excited. I've been thinking about starting a blog about my fashion finds for a while & finally decided to do it.
I happen to be really good at finding deals. I've finally gotten my father to understand how I feel about it by likening it to his hobby - hunting.
You have to be dressed correctly for the store, sale, type of shopping, weather, etc... You have to stalk your prey - know what's out there, visit the stores often. You get the exciting rush of the kill, er, find. And I even keep trophies, although mine are in the form of original & sale reciepts instead of dead animals.
To the benefit of many, I sell on ebay quite frequently under the name MissAmyDesignsGemstoneJewelry. I am constantly rotating items through my closet, so it's always interesting!
