Gridline and Gridline Fading Effects - Sunday, September 30, 2007

This is an effect I learned a while back - defining patterns. I actually kinda forgot how to do it so I followed this gridline/defining pattern tutorial. It is truly very simple and there are lots of things you can do with this technique.

One, for instance, follows here. I went ahead and did the next tutorial that teaches how to use masks to fade the scanlines, for a very stylistic technique that you see on a lot of websites. I for one am glad to have learned it, as I know that I will be able to use it a lot.

So, see the photo below for the finished product and then click here for the gridline fading tutorial. This one should not be missed!

Here's a Sphere -

This sphere was super easy to make with use of a few filters.

I love how it looks like a transparent bubble! It's be-u-te-ful!

See the tutorial here!

Pottery Party - Sunday, September 23, 2007

A couple of Fridays ago I had the pleasure of joining my very good friend L at a party she hosted at The Pottery Garden in Ft. Myers. I got to hang out with some cool & very interesting chicks & make a plate in a finish that I adore! (That's my friend's hand on the left!)

The party commenced as we arrived one by one bringing our various treats - wine (always important), chips, dip, veggies and other foods to tempt our taste buds. I brought those yummy Oreo snack cakes, fruit and a gourmet nut mixture. Tres sophisticated - I know!

The people who work there helped us and held our various hands throughout the evening. They were super helpful and fun. We weren't all sure about what we were doing, but they guided us through with our various projects.

This particular girl knew exactly what she wanted and she had a plan! She brought with her a scaled copy of the USA in order to recreate it on a tiny magnet. Talk about detail oriented. You can see she's focused in this photo! Below is a closeup of her plan:

This cool mom brought her daughter, so I got to hang out with someone more my mental age LOL. They were both really fun and interesting to talk to.

There are endless possibilities with what you can make at The Pottery Garden. First of all, you browse through their bisque wear collection and choose a piece that delights you. The price is marked and it includes all your time there, supplies, assistance and the final clear coating and firing of your piece.

I usually try to go with something I can use since I hate clutter & I hate dusting even more. Last time I picked an egg platter since I always make deviled eggs at the holidays & never have a proper platter to prevent those puppies from slipping around. This time I chose a plate. I figure I can do 3 to 7 more and have a complete set eventually - each one unique. And then I'll start on bowls or mugs or something...

So anyway, here is a photo of me decorating my piece with the bubble effect I like so much - it reminds me of a cracked on purpose vase I saw once in a magazine. It looks silly, so I had to have the other Amy capture it for posterity. Also below is what the effect looks like as it's drying. I can't wait to get my new masterpiece back!
Also, here is The Pottery Garden's website - they just got it up, so be sure to visit. And if you're in the area stop in. They are a group of great ladies!

There's lots of ways to changes colors in graphic files in Photoshop.

Displaced Text - Saturday, September 01, 2007

This is an interesting displaced text effect I just learned on WebDesign.org which is my favorite place for Photoshop & other tutorials. I started going through the archives & have learned so much in the past few months that I didn't know. I've also found other ways to do stuff that I already knew how to do.
This technique would be good for making those low-tech spam foiler graphics that you use within a form sometimes. Check out the tutorial here.
