DIY – Pearls & Pins

Tuesday Mar 31, 2009

I did a DIY of the Tom Binns pearl and safety pin necklace that Couture Carrie featured in her post Awesome Amalgamation.  Mine’s a little less simple, just because I didn’t want to pull my pearl necklace apart to do the single strand thing.

The necklace cost me $1.99 at the thrift.  The kilt pins are from Joanns at $2.79 for 2.  I also found this really cool pin (below) from the thrift for $0.99.  I added that to the mix below & it made the necklace a little more ornate.

The pin is reminiscient of Versace so it kind of adds another designer element to the look.  Check out the details:

Stretch Your Wardrobe – Sequins

Monday Mar 30, 2009

Here’s an idea – use a sheer layer to dress down your sequins for day.  They still throw their special glow.  It’s just not as loud as full on sequins.

DIY Hero – Annie Spandex

Friday Mar 27, 2009

Annie Spandex is the first blogger to be highlighted with my DIY Hero spotlight.

I chose her because she has loads of DIY projects on her blog, many of which are very easy for any of us cursed with clumsy thumbs.  Her outfits are always a great mix of casual & off-beat so she is a great one to follow, especially if you’re not one to torture your body for fashion – she always looks so comfy no matter what she’s wearing.  Oh, also, I love her orange wedge boots!  (That’s the real reason I picked her LOL.)

This pic shows a top she redid by scattering bleach over it.  A few more of her DIYs that I recommend are: tie-dyeing (which I may try this weekend), upgrading your skirt to a dress and my personal favorite – splattering paint inside the lines.  Keep an eye on this one – you never know what cool idea she’ll come up with next!

Bright Safari

Thursday Mar 26, 2009

This  crazy bright outfit was inspired by these insane thrifted Ralph Lauren shorts.  These things have pockets within pockets, true story.  Also, inspiring the color palette: new wooden bead bracelets from Walmart.  Yes, I felt a little clownish, but c’mon, how fun is this outfit?  It’s is also comfortable – bonus!

DIY – Candied Crumbcatcher

Thursday Mar 26, 2009

Continuing with the DIY theme for today, here is an amazing piece by The Glamorai.  Not only is she my total girl crush but she has an amazing eye & imagination for how she can re-work something into something else to make it that much more fabulous.  Peruse her blog & you are sure to run into a fab coat she has switched out the lining on to make it even better than its original self or sunnies she had customized for hiding behind “on the subway, under unflattering florescent lighting, on bad dates, days and hangovers.” (She wrote, I quote.)

I’m gushing, aren’t I? OK, so anyway, today’s treat from the most stylish corner of the world is what she calls a Candied Crumbcatcher.  Whimsical, no?  I call it testament to stylish DIY at its best!

Giving Tapered Pants Another Try

Wednesday Mar 25, 2009

I tried tapered pants again.  I left the roll looser around the ankle & I don’t mind them as much.  Do I love them?  Still, no.  But I don’t hate them.

White, Off-white & Silver Layers

Tuesday Mar 24, 2009

Yes, another belt.  This one is from the year I worked at the DKNY outlet in my home town.  I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of it.  It’s a really aged metallic silver leather with a cool toggle buckle.  The scarf is a new buy from Walmart – it was $5.  So is the camisole – it was $3.  I’m pretty adamant that I need to stop doing my grocery shopping there – I nearly double what I spend just by browsing their accessories LOL.

Belt Day + New Organic Tee

Monday Mar 23, 2009

Here is yet another belt I’ve had for years.  I love how it’s totally adjustable so no matter what my size it always fits.  Plus I dig the hardware.  The tee is thrifted, new with tags,  originally from Target – it’s from their organic line which I didn’t even know they had.  I am totally in love with silhouettes of sort of Gothic things – skulls, antlers, branches, birds, bugs & this shirt had them all & more!  Total score.  Plus it’s hu-uge!  Love that!

Styish Movies – The Fall

Sunday Mar 22, 2009

I wanted to share this beautiful movie,  The Fall.  I took a few pics while watching it at home in order to illustrate exactly how visually appealing this movie is, besides being a really cool movie altogether:  plot, direction, etc…

It’s about a stuntman in the 20′s who has been hospitalized.  He wants to end it all & tries to coax a little girl who is also in the hospital to bring him enough morphine to end it all.  The way he does this is by crafting a gorgeous story to tell her in order to convince her she needs to help him.  That’s all I can say – it really is visually brilliant.

I later looked up the director & saw that he also directed one of my other visually favorite movies, The Cell.  Brilliant!
